Can a Schedule Be a Motivator?

Can a weekly schedule help get things done?

Recently, I’ve been thinking about this question.  I often talk about my forays into time management here on the blog.  If you’ve read many of the posts, you’ll know that I am a big proponent of using lists to keep myself organized and working.  I’ve been marginally successful in my use of lists, up until lately.

As of late, life seems to be catching up with me.  There is so much going on, that when I have time to sit down and get to work I don’t really know where to start or what to do.  My list becomes a source of trouble because I am not motivated to work on completing the tasks on the list.  I’ve been looking for something a bit more to help me get motivated and organized so that I can get back to working.

I remembered a while back, when we were having trouble keeping up with the housework here, we created a weekly schedule for getting the house work done.  It was loosely based on the ideas from, and had us doing a few tasks every day so that we were always on top of it.  It was successful here, and the house was truly the cleanest it’s ever been.  Could this possibly work for me and my digi life?

Yesterday, I started working on creating a weekly schedule for the things I need to get done during the week for my digi life.  I usually have a nice chunk of time after my kids go to bed, so I can schedule a few things to get done during that time.  I plan on setting a few tasks to do each night, so that I am not constantly looking to a never ending to do list to get me motivated.

How do you stay motivated to get things done?

    I’m honestly terrible about getting things done, especially digitally. I am a huge fan of to do lists, and I create three lists each morning when I wake up: Must do, should do, can do. My must do list is, of course, a list of the things that MUST be done today, no ifs, ands, or buts. The should do list is things that I have deadlines coming up on, and need to get them done as it fits into my schedule. When it gets to the point where the deadline is tomorrow, it moves to my must do list (I’m great at waiting until the last minute). My can do list is more of a “Eh, these are things I’ve been meaning to get done, like switching my closet from summer to winter, cleaning out my makeup that’s expired, going through my old digi freebies and getting rid of the ones I won’t use…” that sort of thing. It’s stuff that I squeeze in as I have time and motivation. Sometimes my can dos get moved to should dos as they become more pressing (after all, if I haven’t squeezed in switching my closet by our first freeze, it’s going to have to become a should do, instead of just a can do, because it HAS to get done!).

    For me, digitally, I use a very similar process… my must do’s are more deadline-oriented tasks, like CT assignments, scrappy gifts I’m working on that need to be done or ordered by a certain date, and my should-do’s are challenges that are coming up that I’d like to earn points on, or certain projects I’d like to scrap that have no deadlines. My can-do’s are often related to “Hey, I should scrap that photo that I took at x place, because it was really pretty and particularly inspiring.”

    That’s how I try to stay on top of things… it’s a method that works for me, but it seems everyone has their own method for accomplishing things, which is great!
